Do you remember these mason jar solar lights I made during the summer?
Well, I took the idea a few steps further and decided to make jack-o-lantern and ghost mason jar solar light for the front of our house.
my favorite face! |
I took some mason jars from my stash, and painted them with orange and white glass paint. Once they dried, I painted the faces on. I had to go over the faces a second time after the first coat dried to make sure they were really black. After my jars had dried for 24 hours, I baked them in the oven according to the directions (325 degrees for 40 minutes.)
I did have a little trouble finding the solar lights. The store where I had bought the last ones I'd used were completely sold out, so I found the ones I used at Home Depot. I wasn't sure if they were going to work, but I figured if they didn't, I could just bring them back. So I brought them home and found out they fit inside the rings perfectly!
So I taped off the solar panel part and gave them a coat of spray paint. White for the ghost jars and green for the pumpkins. When everything had dried, I took the tape off the solar panel and put the jars together. I didn't glue the solar light tops to the rings this time because the lights and the rings didn't have much of a surface to glue with. Amazing Boyfriend had an idea that I should get white and green duck tape and tape the solar lights and the lids together instead of painting them, but I already had the spray paint, so I wasn't going to buy something else to finish this project.
I think they turned out really cute!
The ghost jars turned out better then the pumpkin jars, although I think it's because the light is white against white jars so it makes them brighter. I'm still very happy with how they turned out.

ReplyDeleteI love the ghosts, but the orange face is awesome in the daytime! Thanks for linking to Wicked Awesome Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! You know, perhaps if you painted the jar orange (assuming you are doing the insides of the jar) and then put white behind the orange it would make the orange show up better. At least it works on my nail polish! :)
ReplyDeleteVery unique idea and I think they turned out great. My kids would love them!
